Plenary Indulgence Opportunity

Plenary Indulgence

During the Month of November

The Holy See announced this week that they are allowing modifications to the plenary indulgences one can obtain for the deceased or themselves during the month of November due to the current need to avoid large groups. Traditionally, one can obtain a plenary indulgence for the faithfully departed by visiting a cemetery on November 1-8, and for themselves by attending Mass on November 2, All Souls Day. This year the indulgence can be obtained on any day in November with a few additional modifications including options for the homebound.

What is a plenary indulgence?

“An indulgence is the remission before God of the temporal punishment due to sins whose guilt has already been forgiven, which the faithful Christian who is duly disposed gains under certain prescribed conditions, through the action of the Church which, as the minister of redemption, dispenses and applies authority the treasury of the satifactions of Christ and the saints.”

“An indulgence is partial or plenary according as it removes either part or all of the temporal punishment due to sin.”

The faithful can gain indulgences for themselves or apply them to the dead.   – Catechism of the Catholic Church 1471
