The Holy See Press Office announced that Pope Francis’ funeral Mass will take place on Saturday, April 26, 2025, at 10:00 AM (local time) in St. Peter’s Square.

A special Mass for the dead for Pope Francis will be at OLC on Tuesday, April 29th at 7:00 PM.

On March 13, 2013, Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio, 76, archbishop of Buenos Aires was elected in the conclave to become the first pope from the Americas. As the 265th successor to Saint Peter, he was the first pope to take the name of Francis, a name chosen in honor of Saint Francis of Assisi because he wanted “a church which is bruised, hurting and dirty because it has been out on the streets, rather than a church which is unhealthy from being confined and from clinging to its own security.” (Evangelii Gaudium, 49). Coat of Arms

Pope Francis’ motto on his coat of arms, “miserando atque eligendo” is taken from a homily by Saint Bede, an English eighth-century Christian writer and doctor of the Church of the Gospel account of the call of Saint Matthew. It roughly translates to “having mercy, he called him.” Read more on the Vatican’s website.

On Monday morning (April 21, 2025), Cardinal Kevin Farrell, Camerlengo of the Apostolic Chamber, announced the death of Pope Francis:

“Dearest brothers and sisters, with deep sorrow I must announce the death of our Holy Father Francis. At 7:35 this morning, the Bishop of Rome, Francis, returned to the house of the Father. His entire life was dedicated to the service of the Lord and of His Church. He taught us to live the values of the Gospel with fidelity, courage, and universal love, especially in favor of the poorest and most marginalized. With immense gratitude for his example as a true disciple of the Lord Jesus, we commend the soul of Pope Francis to the infinite merciful love of the One and Triune God.” (Vatican News)

Note that the canonization of Bl. Carlo Acutis has been postponed due to the passing of Pope Francis. We will share more when we hear of the new canonization date.
